May Day of Action to Stop Extra Billing & Privatization (Kelowna)

Join the BC Health Coalition, allies, and supporters on May 1st at 10 am to deliver a clear message on behalf of the public to private for-profit clinics whose private fees to patients cost the public purse millions of dollars in federal fines. The public shouldn't have to foot the bill for unlawful fees!

We need your help. RSVP below and join us.

What: On May Day, otherwise known as International Workers’ Day, health care workers, seniors and other residents will present a symbolic $15.9 million invoice in front of Okanagan Surgical Health Centre on behalf of the public. Okanagan Surgical Health Centre is suspected to be one of the many BC private clinics extra-billing patients. [1]

Why: The BC government recently announced that the federal government clawed back $15.9 million in health funding from B.C. The $15.9 million was estimated from the amount of extra-billing taking place at private clinics as a result of three audits done in 2017-18 and a previous audit. It’s wrong that the public and patients are paying for the unlawful extra billing levied by private clinics. [2]

The proliferation of private clinics in B.C. under the previous government is a result of ongoing privatization of our health care system. The explosion of private clinics and extra-billing has led to longer wait times in the public system. Contrary to the myth that paying privately "takes pressure off of the public system", evidence from BC, Europe, and Australia show that it creates longer wait times for everyone who relies on the public system. [3]

Working people and families will no longer stand for the erosion of public health care—a system that we all rely on when we need it—in the name of profit. Support public health care! Stop extra billing and privatization!

Join us on May 1st at 10 am to send a clear message that unlawful extra-billing at the expense of patients in need, and the public purse, will no longer be tolerated in B.C.
